The Mannheim potassium sulfate production technology was developed by the Mannheim Verein in Germany in the 19th century. The core technology of this method is the Mannheim reaction furnace. With a century of development, improvements have been continuously made in terms of the materials and structural design of the furnace, as well as in energy conservation and environmental protection. The Mannheim process, currently employed by Hebei Aoliande Chemical Equipment Co., Ltd., is the most mature technology for producing potassium sulfate. It produces potassium sulfate of high quality and grade, with high potassium yield, while also producing high-quality by-product hydrochloric acid. The process used in this project is considered advanced technology.
The most common method of producing potassium sulphate is the Mannheim Process, which is the reaction of potassium chloride with sulphuric acid at high temperatures. The raw materials are poured into the centre of a muffle furnace heated to above 600ºC. Potassium sulphate is produced along with hydrochloric acid in a two-step reaction via potassium bisulphate. This method for creating SOP accounts for 50% to 60% of global supply. The Mannheim Process is also the most expensive of the processing techniques due to the high input costs associated with purchasing MOP and sulphuric acid.
